Buffy Vs Edward – feminist dream come true
Just had to post this video – it’s one of those things that you instantly want everyone you know to watch and appreciate along with you. I admit to having read (and sometimes enjoyed) the Twilight series, but seeing the creepy misogynist stereotypes inherent in it contrasted and mocked the hell out of by the pro-feminist messages Joss Whedon’s Buffy series promotes makes me excessively happy. The mix was made by a wonderful feminist man called Jonathan McIntosh (see his blog for more).
Here is a quote about what prompted Jonathan to make the piece:
Over the course of the film Edward is in turns patronizing, condescending and just downright creepy. He spies on Bella, he stalks her (for “her own good”), he sneaks into her room to watch her sleep (without her consent) and even confesses to a deep, overpowering desire to kill her. We marveled at how the film attempted to present this behavior as sweet and deeply romantic – and how the larger pop culture discussion continued that framing for millions of young Twilight fans. At several points during the film Anita and I found ourselves asking each other: “What Would Buffy Do?” (Source)
